Cotton is a cellulose material and you can compare a it to a paper. When it's burn the flame spreads quickly, and it leaves white smoke. You can still find some fire even when the flame is off.
Wool is similar to human hair, it has all the character when you burn a human hair. It curls, it smells bad, burns slowly and it doesn't retain fire after the flame is off
