1 Add a thick layer of mulch and let it rot to improve the soil of existing gardens. 
Get local compost from your city or town hall service department.
Plan ahead for bulky organic soil amendments -- compost, manures, and leaves that may be added by the wheelbarrow-load to improve the soil.

a) Rotation of crop,- I.e. the cultivation of different crop on the same piece of land each year during different times..
b)Strip cropping or the cultivation of erosion-inducing crop in rotation and alternation with erosion-resisting crop.
c)Terrace and contour-bunding - involves the construction of bank along the contours across the hill slopes.
d)Contour ploughing - is the cultivation of land along the Contour in order to check the flow of water , which otherwise can wash away the soil.
e) Cover crop - are grow in order to cover the bare ground . Such crop are grown mostly in orchards and plantation where the gestation period of tree crop is long .
f) Fallowing - or allowing the land to rest, so that the natural forces can replenish soil fertility.
Water management - helps to stimulate bacteria. This leads to higher crop yield.
Rock dams - help to check the speed of water flow. Thus, it controls the occurrence of floods.
