In a concave lens, the image is always virtual. In a convex lens, the image is real if the distance of the object from the lens is greater than the focal length and virtual if it is less than the focal length. If the object is at the focus the image is formed at infinity.

We can find out if an image formed is real or virtual by its properties.

Point 1 : A real image is formed when rays converge, whereas a virtual image occurs where rays only appear to diverge.

Point 2 : Real images will be inverted and convex lenses will form a real image. Whereas Virtual images will be erect and concave lenses will form a virtual image.

Point 3 : Real images are formed on the screen while virtual images appear to be on the lens or the mirror itself.

Point 4 : Real images are formed due to the actual intersection of light rays whereas virtual images are formed due to the imaginary intersection of light rays.

These are the difference between real and virtual images by which you can easily find out the nature of image.
