Let suppose we have to find hybridisation of CH4 then Central atom carbon have 4 valence electrons and H is a monoatomic gas and present as 4mol .. Anion Cation not present So=1/2[4+1×4+0-0]= 4..so we have to always minus 1 in our ans. so 4-1=3 then it is sp3 hybridised..if it came 2 then sp2 if it came 1 then sp if it came 5 then sp3d if it came 6 then sp3d2
in short sum of the power of s,p,d is alwas equal to your answer-1.
