For Calculating valency for atoms having Valence electrons from 1 to 4 the valency just the same. For Calculating valency for atoms having Valence electrons from 5 to 6 we need to subtract from 8.

Explanation:

Valency is the number of electrons gained or lost by the atom. For the atoms having Valence electrons 1 to 3 it's easy to lose electrons, this valency is as it is. For atoms having Valence electrons 4, it's difficult to lose or gain electrons but it can share electrons to attain octet , thus the valency is 4. For atoms having Valence electrons from 5 to 6 , it's difficult to lose electrons‌, but it's easy for them to gain electrons to attain octet configuration ( 8 electrons in Valence shell ), thus we need to subtract the Valence electrons from 8.
