how can we know whether a substance is an acid or a base by just looking at its formulae??

Ok if it is an acid then it will usually have a hydrogen in the beginning.

Base will haveMetal oxide or other compound that reacts with an acid to neutralize it and produces water and a salt. Bases increase the concentration of hydroxide (OH-) ions in an aqueous solution.

From the Arrhenius Theory we can conclude that...

Acids are substances which dissociate in aqueous solution to give H+ ions
Bases are substances which dissociate in aqueous solution to give OH- ions

Hence, by looking at the formula of a compound,
the compoundswhich has H+ like HCl, HNO3, H2CO3, etc are acids
the compounds which has OH- like KOH, Fe(OH)2 are bases
