Burn magnesium ribbon in air , it will form magnesium oxide. Then dissolve the ash of magnesium oxide in water to form magnesium hydroxide which is a alkali.

Mg + O2 --------- MgO
MgO + H2O---------- Mg(OH)2
The alkali magnesium hydroxide is used as an antacid to neutralize stomach acidity.
