A great deal depends on the terrain of the land being measured. If the ground is walkable, and it offers an unbroken view, typical surveying equipment (transit, aided by GPS, etc.) may be used. If, however, the plot is thick with trees and brush, offering no access to GPS, it may be that your best approach is by aerial view—which is pretty expensive, unless you are measuring a lot of property. I would ask a surveyer, whose expertise in this area far exceeds mine. There may well be new electronic equipment that can tackle the problem of heavily-blocked vision very handily. Good luck.
