In simple words, literacy can be defined as one's ability to read and write. UNESCO has made an estimate of the education and literacy rate in a country from various sources. There are specific methodologies used by countries to measure the literacy rate. There are four categories of measurement :

1) self - reported literacy declared directly by individuals,

2) self - reported literacy declared by the head of the household,

3) tested literacy from proficiency examination, and

4) indirect estimation or extrapolation.
