If a solid object has an irregular shape, a stone, for example, its volume can be measured in two ways. One is by using a measuring cylinder, and the other one is by using an overflow jar.
Measurement of volume of irregular solid bodies both heavier and lighter than water including those soluble in water, by displacement of water or other liquids in a measuring cylinder.

Answer:
It depends on how big the solid is, but if small enough then this works great. Place it in a tank of water, then measure the volume of the displacement. So tank content is H x R^2 x Pi, then H + Obj x R^2 x Pi.
