To achieve the target of one-third of land area under forest cover for naturally sustainable lives on earth, there is a need to effectively implement the afforestation initiatives.
Ways to be taken:
1) For any forest land being acquired for development purpose (green field projects) must be compensated by the equivalent land in the another area for the very purpose of afforestation.
2) A separate fund set up for the purpose of afforestation is to be used with transparency and accountability in respect of density of afforestation done. In other words, dense forests are more desirable than the scarce forest on a same amount of land.
3) NREGA workers may be employed for cultivation of trees. That will be helpful for alleviation of the poverty and reducing inequality.
4) Political will along with the awareness among the people regarding the tradition and necessity of conversing the forest is key to succeed in the mission.
