  • We purify the blood by artificial methods called dialysis. Dialysis replace the functions when your kidney no longer work.
  • There are two types of dialysis: Hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis.
  • Hemodialysis is a procedure where a dialysis machine and special filter called an artificial kidney or a dialyzer are used to clean our blood.
  • The dialyzer, filter has two parts , one for our blood and one for a washing fluid called dialysate. Blood cells, protein and other important things remain in our blood.
  • Hemodialysis can be done in a hospital, in a dialysis center, it is usually done 3 times per week for 4hours at a time.
  • People at home do dialysis, 4-7 times per week for short hours. One of the measures our dialysis care team may use is called urea reduction ratio(URR), is called kt/v.
  • To ensure that you are getting enough dialysis:

Our kt/v should be at least 1.2,

Our URR should be at least 65 percent.
