Not every fire is the same if only flammable liquid is burning and there is not a huge amount it will burn itself out pretty fast usually. You can use water to protect the exposures and if you know what your doing use a water fog to cool the fire. Since you are asking this question I will presume you have no experience and tell you do not use water on the flammable liquid fire. If the fire is small you can use a CO2 or Dry Chemical Extinguisher to control or extinguish it. Never let the fire get between you and your exit if you are going to fight it. Make sure someone is calling 9–1–1 before you start your firefighting. There was a building under construction a few years ago and the workers attempted to put out a fire that had started during the finishing of the framing stages they used every extinguisher they had and almost got it out, but no one had called the fire department and they lost the building.
