How can we say that lichens are pollution indicator?

As lichens absorb sulphur dioxide therefore it is used as pollution indicator.

lichens are regarded as pollution indicators because they are sensitive to SO2 & do not grow in polluted areas. their presence indicates the absence of pollution in that area & their absence indicates that the area is polluted.
