how can work done by a force be negative .. explain by examples

Wahida05: Positive and Negative Work. ... Work done by a force is positive if the applied force has a component in the direction of the displacement. When a body is falling down, the force of gravitation is acting in the downward direction. The displacement is also in the downward direction.
mawbleiwelldone: but the direction of the upwards force is anti parallel to the displacement

the work done by a force can be negative if it acts against the direction of the motion of the body.

a work is done by a force is negative if the direction of the force applied is opposite to the direction to which the object is displaced i.e,the angle between the force and the direction of the motion of the object is greater than 90 Degree.
Example
1) when an object is thrown upwards its motion is opposed by the gravity of the earth and the angle between the force and the direction of the motion of the object is 180 degree.
so,in this case cos180=-1
so,we have a negative work done.
