Answer:

Depending on what they say and how they say it, there are various types of sentences. They can be of four kinds namely: assertive or declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, imperative sentence and exclamative or exclamatory sentence.

1. Assertive or Declarative sentence: A sentence that simply says or states something.

Example:

This is a difficult poem.

Ramesh has read this book.

2. Interrogative sentence: A sentence which asks a question. In this sentence, the predicate, or a part of it comes before the subject.

Example:

Is this a difficult poem?

Has Ramesh read this book?

3. Imperative sentence: A sentence which gives an order, makes a request, an entreaty or a suggestion.

Example:

Stay quiet! (order)

God have mercy on us. (entreaty)

Please give me a glass of water. (request)

Let me help you. (suggestion)

Very often, in this type of sentence, the subject is not mentioned.

Example:

Keep quiet!

The subject ‘you’ is understood: (You) Keep quiet!

4. Exclamative or Exclamatory sentence: A sentence which expresses some strong feeling or emotion.

Example:

How learned ramesh is!

How difficult this poem is!

Usually, begins with ‘What’ or ‘How’, and in such a sentence, the predicate, or a part of it may come before the subject.

Example:

How blue is the sea!

What a surprise Vani gave us!
