how can you appreciate the nature of seasons

A single shoot, on its way to becoming a simple blade of grass, pokes up through the snow. Then another appears, and another. Before we know it, there is a swatch of grass nearly large enough to sit upon. It may still be a handful of days before we can actually sit on that patch of grass without the risk of frostbite, but spring is surely on the way. At least a day of 60-degree temperatures gets our hopes headed in that direction.
While the sun's warmth certainly gets one thinking of the days to come, it is the blades of grass that hold a special place in my heart. For as long as I can remember, those patches of grass have marked the beginning of spring for me. They meant the baseball fields would soon be snow-free. They meant the ice would soon be off the river and the hiking trails would soon be drying out. No matter how long before the actual season they appeared, those patches of grass signaled the beginning of my spring.
