Valency is the combining capacity of an element..i.e. the number of electrons gained, lost and shared by an atom..
Valency is calculated by seeing the number of valanced electrons..i.e. the number of electrons in the outermost shell of an atom..
For example, calcium has 2 electrons in its outermost shell..so its valency is 2

Hope it helped

It can be done by if valence electrons are less than or equal to 4 then valency = no. of valence electrons and if more than 4 then 8 minus valence electrons.
