how can you conclude that Muni is from poor economic background - a question from treasure trove volume 2 'a horse and two goats'
Answers
R.K Narayan’s short story “A Horse and Two Goats”, first published in The Hindu (1960). The story is set in India’s seven hundred thousand villages, Kritam. Muni, the protagonist along with his wife are the poorest resident. Muni had a typical breakfast or lunch consisting of millets and if lucky, onions. He has no money to buy the ingredients from the village shop such as chili, dhal, curry leaves, coriander and potato. He asks the shop owner to give him on credit and would pay off past debts when his daughter would send him money on his fiftieth birthday.
However, he is unable to buy the ingredients and asks his wife to sell the drumsticks. Therefore, such instances depict that Muni is from the poor economic background.
Muni is the main character of the story and he is an old and poor farmer.
In the story the author says that Muni once used to be rich which is a clear indication that he is now poor.
His wife also at one point tells him that he has four teeth left which if understood properly means he has nothing left.
