We can convert benzene into toluene by using Friedel craft alkylation reaction.

Explanation:

  • Toluene is methyl (CH_3) group attached to benzene ring. we have to substitute only CH_3 group at any position of benzene to convert benzene to Toluene.
  • Friedel craft alkylation involves the formation of carbocation and it is a type of Electrophilic Addition reaction. In this reaction we use chloromethane (CH_3Cl) and anhydrous aluminum chloride(AlCl_3).
  • There are three steps in this reaction-Generation of carbocation, attack of carbocation on benzene, regaining of aromaticity. All the steps and formation of Toluene are shown in attached picture.
