The crystal grain size can be quantitatively calculated by Scherrer equation according to the diffraction peak broadening in the XRD curves. Actually, the results calculated by the Scherrer equation are the thickness that perpendicular to the crystal planes.

  • XRD can only give crystallite size. Note that a nanoparticle can contain many crystallites. So the crystallite size is equal or less than a nanoparticle size.

  • -TEM and SEM can provide you with the precise size of a nanoparticle.

  • - DLS can show us the hydrodynamic nanoparticle size. Hydrodynamic size is usually equal or bigger than the real particle size measures by SEM or TEM.
