To measure the volume of a piece of stone:

1.Take a piece of brass, a measuring cylinder, fine thread of sufficient length and some water.

2.Place a measuring cylinder on a flat horizontal surface and fill it partially with water.

3. Note the reading of the water level very carefully.

4.Now tie the piece of brass with a thread and dip it completely into water. We see that the level of water rises.

5.Note the reading of the new water level.

6.The difference in the initial and final water level reading's gives us the volume of stone.

Answer

  • Place a piece of brass ,a measuring cylinder, find thread of sufficient length and some water.
  • Place a measuring cylinder on a flat horizontal surface and fill it partially with water.
  • Note the reading V1 of the water level very carefully.
  • Now tie the piece of brass with a thread and dip it completely into the water. we see that the level of water rises.
  • Note the reading V2 of the new water level.

Draw the diagram given above

  • difference in the two levels of water gives the volume of the piece of brass
  • initial level of water V1= 60ml
  • level of water When brass is immersed V2 =80ml
  • therefore volume of water displaced = V1 -V2

=80ml - 60ml

=20ml

  • therefore volume of the piece of brass = 20
  •  {20cm}^{3}

Note 1 ml is 1 cm cube
