Soft water forms a lather easily when mixed with soap, but hard water does not.Temporary hardness is caused by dissolved calcium hydrogencarbonate, Ca(HCO3)2.Permanent hardness is caused by dissolved calcium sulfate. Unlike temporary hardness, it is not removed by boiling the water.
