If you lift a book and set it back down there no work is done because the distance is zero and anything times zero is always zero.
But the farther you move something or the greater the displacement or distance. The more work you have done on the object.
If you hold the book at a roper angle, then at once you will be able to lift the book so you won't have to try again.
Therefore, more work will be done.
