answer :

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is known as the "second brain" or the brain in the gut because it can operate independently of the brain and spinal cord, the central nervous system (CNS). It has also been called the "first brain" based on evidence suggesting that the ENS evolved before the CNS.

Answer:

1. Enteric nervous system the second brain consists of sheaths of neurons embedded in the walls of the long tube of our gut, or alimentary canal.

2. The second brain measures about nine meters to end from the esophagus to the anus.

3. The second brain consists some 100 million neurons, more than in either the spinal cord or the peripheral nervous system.

4. It can operate independent of the brain and spinal cord.

5. It controls peristaltic movements, secretion of enzymes etc..,

6. It contains support cell.

7. It can capable of coordination of reflexes.

8. The unique feature of this enteric nervous system is to alter its response depending on different factors such as bulk and nutrient composition.

9. Hence we can justify that the enteric nervous system as the second brain of the gut.
