Firstly it consist of the layers of neurons embedded around the wall of the gut tube, which accounts for more than the number of neurons in the spinal cord. These neurons helps us to feel the inner system of our gut and its other contents. It has the ability to control its our reflexes and actions.

The enteric nervous system is termed as the second brain of the gut because it has the ability to operate independent of the brain and the spinal cord. This it is possible because the enteric nervous system can autonomously coordinate its own reflexes.
