Just look around you! Space is simply distances from a place to place, not only large areas outside of Earth. Space is all around us.
Space and Time are both real. Only that they aren't physical things but rather simply phenomena. For this reason you cannot bent or affect Space. It has no physical properties to be bendable.
Space is as real as are Love, Hate, Care. And nether of them is physical thing. They all are phenomena. Some are of physical world, some are of spiritual or the world of consciousness.
The same about waves. Waves themselves aren't physical thing. They need physical matter and specific properties of a given matter to come about. So, waves are real but they aren't physical things. They are phenomenon. And so is the Space.
