Laboratory method: A mixture of ammonium sulphate and sodium nitrate on heating below 25OoC gives nitrous oxide. N2O may be obtained by direct heating of Ammonium nitrate below 250 oC but reaction is very fast and explosion takes place. N2O is collected over hot water because it is soluble in cold water
