when metallic oxides react with water they form metallic hydroxides which are basic in nature.to show that these are basic in nature,we should conduct a litmus paper test.in this experiment,we will observe that red litmus turns blue on coming in contact with them.this shows that metallic oxides are basic in nature.

please send a thanks if you find the answer useful.

The oxide ions in a metal oxide generally react with water to form hydroxide ions which are basic in nature (OH-). ... Some other metal oxides (like ZnO and Al2O3) are basic but also acidic oxides: ZnO + H2O + 2 OH- --> Zn(OH)42- in which reaction hydroxide is needed and not formed!
