Apparently there’s a traditional fable (usually attributed to Aesop) called The Jackdaw in Borrowed Feathers, which is perhaps where expressions such as to “shine in borrowed feathers” came from. Google Books does throw up a number of instances of that phrase, but there seems to be a heavy bias towards India. So it seems likely that the “shine” variant may be a regional one?
