Ashoka is known as a unique ruler as he killed all his brothers to succeed to the throne and wanted to conquer the whole of India.He conquered almost all of India but after the kalinga war finished he saw a lot of innocent people die in the battle.After that he decided to become a buddhist monk and started spreading buddhism to all the other parts of the world.

Ashoka was a Mauryan king... He was a great ruler and defeated many rulers and proved to be a formidable foe to the others...
But after the end of fierce KALINGA wars , many lost their lives.. Seeing this, the king devoted the rest of his life to renunciation [sanyass]..
