Considering that the most common definition of democracy is “a government of the people, by the people, and for the people”, federalism paves way for the constituent units to be working, self sufficient and responsible.

That, is the essence of democracy - independence, self sufficiency and responsibility.

Federalism enhances democracy in India in the following ways.

i) Two or more levels of government :

Federalism is a method of administration in which the political power is distributed between a central government and its various constituting units. Usually, a federation has two levels of administration. One is the management for the whole country and the other authorities at the state or rural level.

(ii) Same Citizens Separate jurisdiction: Several tiers of the administration administer the same residents, but each tier has its individual control in particular subjects of legislation, assessment, and management.

(iii) The superiority of the Constitution: The authorities of the particular levels or tiers of the administration are designated in the Constitution. So the existence and authorization of each tier of the government are constitutionally safeguarded.
