How can you say lichens are pollution indicator

Lichens are living organisms which are formed by the symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi.

Lichens are sensitive to pollution and die due to the increasing pollution in the present generation.

When lichens die or disappear , it is an indication for pollution in a place.
