Helen was an exceedingly emotional and sensitive child. Let’s first talk about her emotional nature. After being her illness left her disabled, she felt choked and as if held by some invisible hands. She wanted to express herself, but could not. This led to tantrums. She kicked and cried in frustration. After the birth of Mildred, she felt deprived of her mother’s love. Once when she found her sleeping in the cradle meant for her doll, Nancy, she toppled it, nearly injuring her younger sister. She was deeply hurt at the Frost King episode!

Let’s talk about her sensitive nature. She was sensitive to everything around her. Though she could not see or hear, yet she was aware of all the visual and auditory stimuli around her. She could sense the arrival of new guests; she could sense how her mother dressed up in front of the mirror. Similarly, she could sense the beauty of flowers, rivers, animals, and nature.

All these things prove she was emotional as well as sensitive.
