Helen Keller was understably frustrated, angry and depressed before the arrival of her teacher miss Anne Sullivan. Unable to connect with those in the world around her, she felt imprisoned. Having frequent tantrums in order to get some attention she carved and also to have the excuse afterwards to crawl into her mother's lap and be held. She describes herself (in the biography) as so isolated by her disabilities that she could not feel compassion and empathy towards other people.
