As soon as we put the food into the mouth a liquid called saliva which contains digestive enzymes starts to digest the carbohydrates so we can say that "digestion begins in mouth".

We say that "digestion begins at mouth" because the mouth is the external opening for the alimentary canal and the first part of the digestive system.

It contains the saliva that has the salivary amylase, this salivary amylase mixes with the food and creates something called as the bolus.

The salivary amylase has an extensive activity that breaks down the carbohydrates and starch in food. This breaking process enables the next stage of digestion at ease.
