The landlords in villages have been the high Castle people who believed in following and enforcing the rigid caste system in India. They not only wielded economic but also political power in the villages. Landlords usually wear also the part of the gram panchayat and their decision was considered as the final verdict.
It was only decades after the independance when the position of the landlords began to decline the notion of caste system began to break down.
