How can you show that sound cannot travel through vacuum?
Answers
To prove that sound doesnt travel through vaccum we take 2 examples
1)The sun produces sound but it doesnt reach the earth
2)If a person screams in space it cannot be heard by his crew members around him
We can perform a small experiment to prove that sound waves can not travel through vacuum.
Experiment:
Tools used:
Glass jar, Electric bell, rubber lid for glass jar.
Procedure:
Take a glass jar. Put electric bell inside it. Completely connect the circuit of electric bell. Now put the rubber lid on the jar such that outside air is not allowed to enter the jar. Now press the switch of electric bell. You can hear sound of bell.
Using vacuum pump remove the air present in the jar such that completely vacuum is created in the jar. Now press the switch of bell again. This time you can not hear sound of electric bell.
Conclusion:
Using above experiment it can be proved that sound can not travel through vacuum.
