Externally, the kidneys are bean shaped and dark red in color, with convex and concave bulges. The concave section is called as hilum, where the renal artery, renal vein, and the ureter enter and exit the kidney.

Internally, the kidneys are made up of 3 major regions: Renal Cortex, Renal medulla, and Renal pelvis.

The Renal cortex surrounds the kidneys and is covered with connective tissue called as renal fascia. They also contain the nephrons, which give it a granular appearance.

The Renal Medulla contains the maximum nephrons which are the main functional component of the kidneys. They help in filtering out the fluid from the blood.

The Renal pelvis connects the kidney with the nervous system and the circulatory systems from the rest of the body.
