The gas that is released is Hydrogen.

Test for Hydrogen: Pop sound Test- Bring a burning splinter near the mouth of the jar. If a Pop sound is heard, hydrogen is liberated.

Zn + 2HCl --> ZnCl2 + H2

Hydrogen is an immflamation gas... So when it comes in contact with air a pop sound is created...
