For testing the presence of a base in a substance, we can use acid-base indicators such as litmus paper. If u dip blue litmus paper into an acidic solution, its colour will change to red and vice versa for the basic solution. The tastes of acids and bases also differ. Acids are sour whereas bases are bitter. Don't take me wrong, u can't taste all of the bases, some maybe inedible. There are some natural indicators too, such as turmeric. You might have noticed while washing clothes that when a soap is used to clean a curry stain, the stain will become red. Again when u pour water on the stain, its colour will transform to yellow. At last, there are indicators which have a transformation of smell while coming in contact with acidic or basic environment. These are known as OLFACTORY INDICATORS.
