The protoplast goes onsecreting cell wall materials on the middle lamella, and ultimately a soft, delicate and plastic wall is formed. This is primary cell wall . It consists mainly of cellulose and pectic compounds and may also contain other polysaccharides.

In the primary (growing) plant cell wall, the major carbohydrates are cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin. The cellulose microfibrils are linked via hemicellulosic tethers to form the cellulose-hemicellulose network, which is embedded in the pectin matrix.
