Answer:
CELL DIVISION
It is one of the most fundamental characteristics of life. This is the method which enables life to perpetuate generation after generation. Cell division is the process by which a parent cell divides into two or more daughter cells. Cell division usually occurs as part of a larger cell cycle. New cells need to be produced for growth, replacement, repair and reproduction. There are two types of cell division:
Mitosis- Cell division leading to the growth and development. The chromosome number is maintained at each cell division. The chromosomes duplicate and distribute equally in the daughter cells. This kind of division occurs in all body cells.
Meiosis- Cell division leading to the production of gametes (sex cells). It takes place in the reproductive organs (testis and Ovary) in humans to produce sperms and ova and in flowering plants anthers and ovary to produce pollen grains and ovules. The most significant aspect of meiosis is that the number of chromosomes in the sex cells is halved.
