How children used to have leisure during years before television?

Before the era of television, children solely depended on playing outside. They used to spend their time with friends running, playing, walking, cycling, swimming, fishing, camping and other outdoor stuff. 
This actually had a positive effect on their health even when they were in their older age. In those days there were hardly any cases of depression, anxiety, blood pressure and obesity was actually a term unheard by the most. 
Also when they were inside the house in their free time they would either read books or helped their parents with chores. Fathers usually taught their sons stuffs like plumbing, little electrical word and other things that would be practically useful for them in future. I know all this because my grandpa shared his stories fro the time when there were no televisions, internet or any similar sort of means of entertainment.

they used to play board games such as chess,ludu,scrabble etc. and even played outdoors with their friends
