A city is defined as a large and permanent settlement. It covers a significant area of land that has a shared historical background. Cities may have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law. Cities usually have their own court systems, law enforcement, fire departments, sanitation services and medical care centers. The chief executive of a city is the Mayor. A city council is a legislative body composed of council members.

City with more than 1 million people. These type of cities acts as source for all industrial and domestic needs. Also called as “Metropolis”.

eg. New York, London, Chicago, Hong Kong, Mumbai etc.

A metropolitan city is one which has a central city (metropolis) which then then spreads into the surrounding geographical areas which also get included as part of the city.
Pretty much every city has this characteristic but some are more metropolitan than others. For example, Boston is more metropolitan than New York which is water-locked.
