How close so you have to go near it so as to get its smell

It's all depend upon the kinetic energy of particles of thing which u wanna to smell,,if they have more kinetic energy in them they can reached upto a higher distance and u can smell but if they have less kinetic energy they can only move upto a certain area and in order to get smell u have to go closer..

Just like when u cook food the particles get heated hence acquired mire kinetic energy and reached upto a large distance but when your food cool out u have to come closer to it in order to smell it..
