Zygote is the vital link that ensures continuity of species between organism of one generation and next generation.

Gametes are formed by parents of first generation, these gametes fuses to form zygote. This zygote will develop into complete individual and thus forms next generation.

Thus development of zygote into next generation ensures continuity of species between one generation to another.

If gametes are not fused to from zygote than gametes alone will not ensure continuity of species as gametes alone could not give rise to offspring of next generation.
