Communalism or communal politics in layman language can be traced to what people call vote bank politics.
For example in India,parties use particular symbols of the religion and also may add a sense of fear in the minds of voters about other parties being anti-religion.Plus many parties trace back their origin to a particular religion in order to get votes from that section.
I think u may be asking this question after hearing about communal politics by congress in the latest Gujarat elections.They basically tried to get votes from voters from a particular religion.And as any sane man can tell,it isn't good for the political as well as national scenario as a whole!
