Copper is extracted by the process of roasting :

Roasting:Is a process in which sulphide ores are heated in the presence of oxygen.

2)After Roasting process we get the oxide of metal.

And metal can be obtained easily

2Cu2S+3O2--------2Cu2o+SO2

2Cu2O+Cu2S-------6Cu+SO2

Copper is a less reactive metal which is quite low in reactivity series. Therefore, it can be extracted just by heating its sulphide ore in air.

This involves following steps :-

a) The concentrated copper sulphide ore ( copper glance ) is roasted in air to covert it into copper oxide.

2Cu2S (s) + 3O2 (g) --------> 2Cu2O (s) + 2SO2

b) When a good amount of Copper sulphide gets converted into copper oxide , then the supply of air for roasting is stopped . In the absence of air , copper oxide formed reacts with the remaining copper sulphide to form copper metal and sulphur dioxide .

2Cu2O (s) + Cu2S (s) --------> 6Cu (s) + 2SO2
