The slave trade started in 17th century. The Europeans were not willing to go to the unfamiliar land. This resulted in shortage of workers in plantations. This problem was solved by a triangular slave trade between Europe, Africa and America. The French merchants went to Africa and bought slaves.
Though the National Assembly held debates and discussions on the abolition of slavery but it did not make any law fearing opposition from the businessmen, whose income dependent on the slavery trade. It was in 1794, that the convention passed a law to free all the slaves in French colonies. But this lasted only for ten years because when Napoleon Bonaparte became the emperor of France in 1804, he reintroduced the slavery. Slavery was finally abolished in 1848.
