Revolutionary France abolished slavery in France's colonies in 1794, although it was restored by Napoleon with the Law of 20 May 1802 as part of a program to ensure French sovereignty over its colonies. Haiti formally declared independence from France in 1804 and brought an end to slavery in its territory.

Answer:

The slave trade started in 17th century. The Europeans were not willing to go to the unfamiliar land. This resulted in shortage of workers in plantations. This problem was solved by a triangular slave trade between Europe, Africa and America. The French merchants went to Africa and bought slaves.

Though the National Assembly held debates and discussions on the abolition of slavery but it did not make any law fearing opposition from the businessmen, whose income dependent on the slavery trade. It was in 1794, that the convention passed a law to free all the slaves in French colonies. But this lasted only for ten years because when Napoleon Bonaparte became the emperor of France in 1804, he reintroduced the slavery. Slavery was finally abolished in 1848.
